TBMT III

i love this.

WARNING: CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR BOOK III OF THE BLACK MAGICIAN TRILOGY.

Why did you kill Akkarin?

When I was coming up with the overall plot, which I did over several months, I had a handful of key scenes but no ending. When the idea came for the final scene I knew I had a story worth giving up full time work to write. You see, at the time I was utterly sick of books where all the characters are alive and happily shacked up with a love interest by the end. Nobody died, or if they did, it was in some expected way that left you feeling warm and fuzzy about their 'sacrifice'. Death shouldn't leave you feeling warm and fuzzy. Akkarin was a casualty of war. War is a cruel and random killer. It doesn't kill based on who deserves it more or less.

And, hey, you're never going to forget that ending!

OBS

alright. i shall now blog about obs, before i eat dinner or continue watching hana yori dango. otherwise, i shall never get round to doing it before i completely forget everything.

Day 1
arrived, thought the place looked quite familiar. had difficulty finding my group, then after that just sat there and stoned. i think i slept for a while, actually. people in my watch: adrienna, edlyn, xiao rong, li wei, ashma, theresa, randy, rasyidah, denise, yu jie, siew ling, kristy, verna, sherwin. had some kind of briefing which i can't remember, then we met our instructors. sat in a circle at one side of the parade square and stuff. when we were surrendering our valuables, i realised i brought like seventy dollars and no ezlink card. which is rather stupid, actually. introduction stuff and all. oh yes, i thought the instructor was kind of old at first. heh. his name is khong dee, but everyone calls him dee. made me think of denise at first. angela calls him dee dee, which i find quite amusing. went to check the store, fold the ponchos and tents and groundsheets and all. and there was a lot of food. two full boxes. so we folded and checked everything, then we had that trust game thing where one person falls backwards onto a sheet that the rest of the team is holding. then we had the belay stuff. a belayer is the person at the bottom tightening the rope during rock climbing or stuff like that. and, during the breifing, there were ants in my shirt. it was horribly disgusting. so yes. after that, we learnt how to pitch tents. then we had to cook. half of us went to bathe while the other half cooked. oh yeah. i was in hillary, which is named after the first person to climb mt. everest. so, we bathed. and since they don't switch on the electricity until it gets dark, we had to bathe without lights. by then it was evening so the toilet was dark. so, we ate, washed up and all. then we packed our stuff to go trekking or hiking or whatever you call it the next day. then we had a fire drill. everyone strolled down to the jetty, and we got scolded for strolling. went back, sprayed a bunch of insect repellent, and slept. oh, i was sharing a tent with siew ling, yu jie, and li wei. it was really hot at first, then it got colder so i put on the track pants i was using as a pillow and then slept some more and it was morning.
Day 2
woke up to a cold morning. imagine my extreme joy. had breakfast, packed some more, then we had our morning circle. or maybe it wasn't in that order, but whatever. oh yes, sherwin left. so, in the late afternoon, after a bunch of briefings, we went hiking. we had to carry those gigantic backpacks. the contents: two full water bottles, food and clothes for two days, plus a pair of shoes aside from the ones we were wearing. (for wet activities) plus some extra stuff like the cooking pot and mess tins and tents and stuff to be carried by everyone. uh, so we hiked. reached a campsite where we saw other watches and the sea. and we were all happy, because we thought we could rest. but no, our campsite was further in. with no sea view. it was like a desert or something, gravel and stones and patches of dry grass with trees around. there were tons of mosquitoes. we pitched tents and cooked. because it took so long to build up the fire, we had to clear up in the dark. and because we were in the middle of nowhere, it was really, really, really dark. though not eactly pitch black. went to rinse the utensils in the sea. had to pass the other campsite because the was a fence seperating the beach from the other parts, and the gate was at the other campsite. we saw people happily cooking and chatting AND THE CAMPSITE WAS BRIGHTER AND THEY COULD ACTUALLY SEE WHAT THEY WERE DOING. and, they weren't swatting mosquitoes. we were all grumbling at having gotten the lousy campsite. plus, there were lights from singapore across the sea and we were quite homesick. bloody hell i will stop scratching right now i don't want it to scar that badly. so, the utensils were still so greasy because we didn't have detergent or anything, just seawater. we were quite disgusted. had our circle in the middle of some other watches' tents, because there was no place else. complained and laughed and got briefed, then went to sleep. we sleep early, because there is nothing else to do. and, we have to hide from the insects. it was really hot again. when i was drifting off to sleep, music started playing, and people started singing in some other language. i thought it was from the instructor's camp or something, then i remembered that dee told us something about there being music from some other place on the other side of the sea. or something. i quite liked it at first, the first song wasn't so bad, plus i missed listening to music. so, i slept. but i kept waking up at night because it was really hot, and sleeping on gravel is not very pleasant.
by the way, we couldn't bathe, which was quite disgusting, after sweating so much after hiking. though powder does kind of help. and there were no toilets, so to pee, you have to bring a friend and a poncho and pee in the trees/ grass.
*i can't remember, but i think kayaking was during day two. i think i quite like kayaking, but i was afraid of getting sunburnt. i did anyway, a bit on the left shoulder.
*dee peeled a label of a can and named it can do. it was supposed to be a motivator for us, if anyone complained, they would have to carry can do. and no one wants to carry an extra five hundred grams.
Day 3
woke up, unpitched tents, had breakfast. we left the campsite after morning circle with junko. hiked a bit more, until we reached the quarry place. we played some games, then the watches had to build a raft within an hour and fifteen minutes. all four rafts must be safe to go into the water, or else no one could go in at all. so we worked. an hour and fifteen minutes later, we were only halfway done. the instructors were quite pissed at all of us, because half of some of the watches were just leaving the work to those who knew how to tie knots. time extension of twenty minutes. the other three watches (junko instructor angela, nila utama instructor iskandar, shakleton instructor kenny? names might be spelt wrongly and instructors mixed up.) finished under twenty five minutes, but hillary took something like thirty four minutes. quite embarrassing, since we didn't have an advertisement for our raft, and it was declared unsafe. to our credit, only one team passed the safety test. but they all had adverts. so we gathered, got scolded, told we couldn't go into the quarry, and got sent off for lunch. lunch was pretty fun. instructors are good amusement. especially when being bullied by the watch. then after lunch, we gathered again. and we were told we could go into the water after all, it being a once in a lifetime experience. you have no idea how happy we were. after all the hiking and sweating and heat without a bath, we were DYING for one. and the quarry was so big and nice and it was fresh water. lifejackets and whistles on, then everyone got in. it was sosososososososo fun. and sosososososo refreshing. dee sprayed water at us, so we stole his ernie. he has a small, palm sized ernie hanging from the back of his lifejacket. iskandar has a tigger. so yes. it was highly amusing. =) since four instructors are no match for ten people, and even then, angela wasn't inclined to help the guys. so it was hillary and other random people against three. very amusing. sadly, we had to get out. someone mistakenly took my glasses, and much thanks to theresa for helping me find them. we changed, and went on our way. -to be continued after dinner.
-back.
uh, so, we hiked a while more until we reached a really nice campsite. as in, nice view. it was a bit like a cliff thing, it was kind of jutting out from the main part. a bit lower down to the right, it was a beach. the left were trees. it was just bare, with gravel, and facing the sea. and you could see singapore from there. the front is a rocky area sloping down to the sea. we were all so happy because even when the sun was shining straight down on us with no trees for shelter, there was a lot of wind. plus we saw the sea expedition people kayaking under the sun, and i was happy that we were doing the land expedition. so we all happily pitched our tents facing the sea, cooked, ate, washed up, and gathered for circle. had a nice bonding session before going off to sleep. guess what. there was no wind, and it was really hot again, and it was just so disappointing. but oh well. next day.
Day 4
woke up, unpitched tents before the sun rose. though actually it isn't that dark, when your eyes get adjusted you can mostly make your way around without falling. then we sat on the groundsheets and ate breakfast. the sun rose, we saw the sea expedition people kayaking past our campsite, then we packed up and left. went to an activity site and had morning circle with junko. there was a bit of an obstacle course thing, logs raised above the ground that overlapped in some places and with platforms at other places. we were supposed to hold hands, fourteen of us, and carry two tent bags and three jerry cans across to the other end while holding a water bottle each. wasn't too bad, we finished in almost thirty minutes, a bit after junko. had a bit of reflection, then walked to camp two (the original camp. camp one is for the leadership people.). it only took a while, and when we were nearing camp two, we started cheering and stuff because we were so happy. left the tents and groundsheets at the top of the hill where we would be pitching our tents, the place where all the height challenge stuff were. went down to the store. then angela pointed out a japanese instructor to us, and dee told us that angela was from vietnam. someone went like 'so cute, a thai and a vietnamese!' because dee is half thai or something. uh, yam senged in front of the store, then unpacked and checked the store. i helped theresa wash the tarp, then i helped jasmine for a bit. she was crawling around on the tarp on her hands and knees, scrubbing it. quite amusing. =) then randy and i washed the mess tins and cooking pot and utensils. then we put on our harnesses and helmets and did rock climbing. only it wasn't the normal stones set in the wall kind of thing, but like a natural rock face, there were grooves in the wall and you had to use those to get up. yu jie and siew ling climbed to the top. then it started to drizzle, and they said that there was lightning in the vicinity, so we had to sit in front of the stores and wait. i ate a bit, but i was still dying of boredom there. found jocelyn, but after that the activity was continued. then i think adrienna, edlyn, ashma and kristy climbed it. though not neccessarily in that order. then it was late already, and not everyone could climb. then we did the jetty jump. i didn't want to go in at first, because i thought we had to stay in the water for a while and i always get itchy if i don't wash off after going in seawater. but we just had to jump in and get out. and then i wished we could have stayed in. after that half of us, including me, went to pitch tents while the other half bathed. it was cold, being wet and all. plus the insects were biting. finally we could bathe. then we went back to eat. i heard someone say that they saw a wild boar. though at all the campsites we were told that there were wild boars, so yeah. um, cleared up the cooking area, did some more store packing, then had a circle. dee made mocha for us. =D it was really good. we played a bunch of games, and had tons of laughing fits. especially at the last game, which involved making eye contact and not smiling while saying this-

random female one: dear sister.
random female two: yes, sister?
random female one: this is a solemn occasion.
everyone: mm, indeed it is.
though it doesn't sound funny now, but it was. especially when some people said that dee looked wierd, like an acorn with a big head and small body. quite funny. in the end dee was laughing too, mostly because of the expression on ashma's face. so it went on. but then we had to go to sleep. so we did. though li wei and i didn't want to sleep at first, but then some instructor, iskandar i think, shouted at all the watches to shut up, so we did. and i fell asleep. it was freezing in the night, even though i was wearing track pants already.
Day 5
woke up to a really cold morning. unpitched tents, ate breakfast, washed the groundsheets and fly sheets and laid out the tents, went around looking for lost stuff and all. then we packed up the store and locked it for the last time and did cip. thankfully, we only had to clean the male staff toilet. and when dee went to get the brooms, i heard geek in the pink by jason mraz on the instructors radio. which is the reason for my msn nickname now. the first song i'd heard for so long. the toilet was pretty clean already, we just had to flush the toilets and splash water on the floor and sweep the water into the drain. and yu jie and dee were having a burping competition, kind of. yu jie wins, hands down. =) then we went to the souvenir shop. and because can do had mysteriously disappeared in the night, everyone was looking for it. so dee produced an opened can do in a ziplock bag and said he found it in front of our store and we were all quite puzzled and stuff. then he produced a container of pineapple with ICE. ice is quite desirable when you haven't had it for four days. and we were all quite touched and all, because he said he went to camp one to get the ice. so we talked and got our certificates and filled out a survey and go our photos and everything. took a photo in front of the store. brought our bags to the shelter near the jetty. was bored waiting for everyone to assemble. fell asleep while waiting for our watch's turn to get on the boat. we were the last watch to leave, then we were finally back in singapore. teachers were there waiting for us. got on the bus and waited for the leadership people to arrive. finally they did, and we could go. on the way back to school, everyone was looking out of the windows and commenting on everything that we hadn't seen for days, like tall buildings and schools and cars and handphones and ang mohs. heh. bus driver took a wrong turn and everyone was complaining because we all wanted to get to school quickly. and so were arrived, and i saw eunice, and after a while, we finally managed to get a cab and went home. i love my house.
-the end-
i will miss obs.
oh yes, there might be more that i missed out, but i can't remember right now.

randomness

sitting on my bed, waiting for vicky to reply my sms so i can figure out in what order am i supposed to go where and do what today. oh, and waiting for the rain to stop.

everything you want- vertical horizon.

he is everything you want.
he is everything you need.
he is everything inside of you that you wish you could be.
he says all the right things.
at exactly the right times.
but he means nothing to you and you don't know why.

i love this song, and it always makes me think of the squall and rinoa video. ffviii. which reminds me, i can't wait to watch advent children. but then that sense of anticipation will be gone if i actually watch it, so i can't bear to watch it yet. see, im wierd.

still standing- the rasmus.

oh yes. i am very broke. and i owe my father money. i also owe amelia, pamela, vicky and jocelyn presents. and then mothers' day tomorrow. oh well. damn. it's still raining really heavily, and vicky has disappeared off the face of the earth.

shadow- ashlee simpson.

oh yes, exams over.
english- alright i guess.

social studies- four source based and two structured within a time limit. need i say more?
biology- um, will pass, probably.
e maths- paper one was ok, paper two was not.

long post

ok, this shall be a long post. i know long posts are hell to read on my skin, but no one actually reads them anyway. so basically, i am talking to myself. =D i already keep a journal for that purpose, but then i am narcissistic and egoistic and therefore want the world to read my rantings. oh, whatever. today was a fun and interesting but not very productive day. vicky came over. ^_^ we were supposed to mug today, but she ended up reading my rurouni kenshin scanlations and i read my book. i think that was the only productive thing i did today. well. not that i do anything productive any day. but you know. it's called ironhand's daughter and it's really nice, but maybe a bit sad. it's one of those fantasy type books. i seem to like them. and i just realised i do not know how to describe what i felt about the book. as in, i liked it, but i don't know why. i'll stick to nice and sad. um, there were a ton of things i wanted to say but i forgot. oh yeah, yesterday evening slash night was horrible. i sat through tuition for three hours, hoping to walk back home later, but then my mum had to give the cheque to the teacher so she sent me home. i called her and she told me she would be there in ten minutes, but then i sat there for ages. or maybe it was just ten minutes. but then, whatever. so they were going out to eat, and i didn't want to go, so they sent me home first. when we stopped in front of the gate i was really eager to get home, so i opened the door. and i fell out. i skinned my knee, poked a few holes in the epidermal of my elbow (roads are bumpy) and made my palm a bit red for a while. it's annoying, kneeling on my bed trying to shift everything to one side and having to sit down instead because i can't kneel. but then it's such a small scrape and im just being whiny. hmm. i really should study. i really cannot cannot wait for exams to be over. i have a ton of stuff to watch and read and all. then i can slack without even feeling the slightest bit guilty and hopeless and stuff. yes, i should study after i bathe. but then, i shall post a short excerpt of a part of the book first. ok, i can't choose, and it would take a while to type, so never mind. shall post an excerpt of an excerpt of the next book.

"You have much to learn, boy. About war. About warriors. Aye, the city fell, and before it other cities. But we don't have cities here, and we need no walls. The mountains are like a fortress, with walls that pierce the clouds. And the clansmen don't wear bright breastplates and parade at festivals, they don't march in unision. Stand a clansmen against a Lowlander and you will see two men, but you will not be seeing clearly. The one is like a dog, well trained and well fed. It looks good and it barks loud. The other is like a wolf, lean and deadly. It barks not at all. It kills. The Aenir will not come here yet. Trust me."

i like it very much. especially the wolf.
